I was born in Marquette, Michigan and grew up in Iron Mountain, Michigan (in the Upper
Peninsula). My family later moved to Alabama, where I graduated from high school
in 1970. I then
attended Emory University,
graduating in 1974. I
then spent almost four years in the
Peace Corps in Cameroon, Africa, where I taught
English to French-speaking high school students. I started grad school in 1978 at the University of Minnesota, earning my M.A. degree in
1982 and my Ph.D. in 1985. I met my wife,
Dene
Thomas, in grad school, and we both got jobs at the Univ. of Idaho in 1984.
Since then, she has moved on to become president of
Lewis-Clark State College. We now live in
Lewiston, and I commute up to Moscow.
When I'm not working at the UI, I'm often occupied with my duties as the
president's spouse at LCSC and as
president of the Idaho-Washington Concert
Chorale.
