VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

 TENURE TRACK ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF ANTHROPOLOGY

The Department of Sociology/Anthropology/Justice Studies at the University of Idaho invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Anthropology beginning August 2008. The appointment will be for an archaeologist with an emphasis in either prehistoric or historic archaeology . The department is seeking a broad range of candidates but is particularly interested in scholars working in western North America with a solid grounding in cultural anthropology. Other desirable qualities are scholars

who can build upon our emphases in the prehistoric or historic archaeology and who can bring analytical expertise outside lithic and faunal studies. The department offers bachelor's degrees in Sociology, Anthropology, and Justice Studies, an M.A. program in anthropology, and participates in an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program with the History department that emphasizes historical archaeology. The department is also involved in the American Indian Studies program and has several courses cross-listed with Washington State University located eight miles away.

Required Qualifications:

· Ph.D. completed by the time of appointment (1 July 2008) with specific background in prehistoric or historic archaeology in western North America

· Demonstrated track record of scholarship and evidence of ongoing research

· Willingness to incorporate graduate students into research program

· Evidence of exemplary teaching experience in archaeology and general anthropology

· Specialization that complements existing course offerings 

Desired Qualifications:

· Ability to teach a broad range of courses

· Experience organizing field schools or successful field projects

· Knowledge of new or innovative technological applications in archaeology

The expectation is that applicants will have a demonstrated track record of scholarship, ongoing research, and be willing to incorporate graduate students into their research program. The typical teaching responsibility in the department is 3/2 including a four-field introduction to anthropology class. Teaching will also include lower and upper level archaeology courses, master’s level graduate level instruction, field schools, and courses based in the instructor’s expertise. All applicants should be committed to research with the ability to produce publications and obtain grants.
