COLLEGE OF LETTERS, ARTS & SOCIAL SCIENCES
General Requirements for Graduation Each student working toward a baccalaureate degree from the College of Letters, Arts & Social Sciences must satisfactorily complete: a. 128 semester credits (unless a higher number is required in the particular curriculum), including at least 36 credits in courses numbered 300 and above. b. The university core requirements (See regulation J-3 in the general catalog) c. The college requirements for the degree sought (see below) d. The departmental requirements
The requirements for the Bachelor of General Studies, and the various professional degrees (i.e., B.S.Arch., B.S. Art Ed., B.F.A., and B.Mus.) are listed by academic unit in the General Catalog. The college B.A. and B.S. requirements do not apply to these professional degrees.
College Requirements for the B.A. and B.S. DegreeB.A. Degree
Foreign Languages: 0-16 credits (0-4 courses), i.e., competence in one foreign language equivalent to that gained by the completion of four semesters of college courses through the intermediate level. This requirement may be satisfied by the completion of either of the following options: (1) 16 credits or four high school units in one foreign language, or (2) 12 credits in one foreign language, and one three credit course in literature translated from the same language. The 12 credits may be satisfied by three high-school units in one foreign language.
Humanities: Six credits (two courses) in addition to the minimum university-wide core requirements of 13-14 credits in humanities/social sciences.
Social Science: Three credits (one course) in addition to the minimum university-wide core requirements of 13-14 credits in humanities/social sciences.
B.S. Degree
Humanities: Three credits (one course) in addition to the minimum university-wide core requirements of 13-14 credits in humanities/social sciences.
Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Statistics: Six credits (two courses) in addition to the minimum university-wide core requirements of 10-11 credits of natural science/math.
Social Science: Three credits (one course) in addition to the minimum university-wide core requirements of 13-14 credits in humanities/social sciences. orThe successful completion of a second major, academic minor, or an area of emphasis of at least 18 credits, which must be approved by the department in which the student is majoring.
HUMANITIES COURSES WHICH SATISFY CLASS REQUIREMENTSThis category does not include courses in composition, writing, linguistics, elementary and intermediate foreign language, religious studies, and elementary performance or creative activity.
