Since fiscal year 2000, the percentage of students in Region Five reporting cigarette use in the past 30 days has remained constant in grade six but has increased in grades eight, 10 and 12..  It also appears active cigarette use begins between grades eight and 10 and is maintained in grade 12.  These data are similar to state data for grades six, eight, and 10.  However, they are lower in grade 12.  In general, it is clear more interventions are needed in grades 8 through 12 in this region.
