Since fiscal year 2000, the percentage of students in Region Four reporting cigarette use in the past 30 days has remained relatively constant.  However, it appears active cigarette use begins between grades six and eight and continues into grade 12.  Further, the percentages of nonuse is higher than state data at grades 6 and 8.  However, more students in Region Four report smoking in the past 30 days in grades 10 and 12.  It is clear, more interventions are needed in grades 8 through 12.
