Since fiscal year 2000, the frequency of cigarette use within the past 30 days has continued to decrease in all age groups.  However, the data is also clear that most smoking begins between grades six and 10 and heavy cigarette use begins between grades eight and 10.  Thus by grade 10, 5% of the respondents in school climate survey indicate they are active smokers, and by grade 12 this has increased to 8%.  The one positive aspect about this data is that the number of steady users has decreased since fiscal year 2000 in both the 10th and 12th grades.  Finally, it is apparent that interventions to reduce cigarette smoking need to begin by the sixth grade and definitely by the eighth grade.
