In general, the number of students reporting alcohol use in the past 30 days has remained relatively constant since FY 2000.  This consistance occurs at grades 6, 8, and 10 with slight increases of use in grade 12.  However, the data are clear that students are beginning to use alcohol somewhat regularly between grades six and eight.  The use continues to increase as students move into grade 10, and then stabilizes somewhat as they enter grade 12.  Thus, alcohol use patterns begin to be established in the middle school years.  More alarmingly, are the number of students who are using alcohol 10 days or more.  Results indicate that approximately 5 to 7% of students in grades 10 and 12 are using alcohol 10 times or more during the past 30 days.  While these numbers are relatively constant since the FY 2000, they indicate that a large number of students are getting alcohol and using it on a regular basis.  it is highly recommended that new prevention interventions are developed and targeted at late grade school and middle school grade levels.
