Activities: Creativity
In early May, 2008 we met to discuss the nature of the scientific method, including its strengths and limitations. This particularly focused on the difference between the scientific and colloquial uses of the word "theory." During the meeting, we watched a television special about creationism and its pseudoscientific rebranding as "Intelligent Design." This led to meaningful and informative discussions among up-and-coming scientists about the nature of their discipline. We discussed falsification - as opposed to the common misbelief of scientific "proof" - and the generation of hypotheses and theories from observed facts. This is not often clarified during young scientists' undergraduate degrees and provided the beginning of what is sure to become a strong framework upon which members might build for future studies.
