We encourage students to expand their educational experience by exploring internship opportunities. There are several internships available through the Department of Psychology and Communication Studies, including community internships and peer advising.
1) "Community Internships" are available on campus and across the country. Please contact our Internship Coordinator, Dr. Mark Yama (myama@uidaho.edu), for more information. Our other professors and our Peer Advisors may also be able to suggest internship sites. The requirements may vary across sites and supervisors, but here is a typical set of Internship Guidelines. Typically, students receive 1 PSYC 498 credit for every 45 hours of internship-related activity.
Common departmental internships include (but are not limited to):
Psyc 498: Applied Community Service (see
Dr. Mark Yama)
Psyc 498: Alternatives to Violence on the Palouse (see
Dr. Mark Yama)
Psyc 498: Center for Disabilities and Human Development
(see Dr. Kenneth Locke)
Psyc 498: Opportunities Unlimited
(see Dr. Jamie Nekich)
Psyc 498:
Internship (see Dr. Mark Yama for
other internships that you have arranged for outside of the department.)
2) Peer Advising (PSYC 498 INTERN: PEER ADVISING or PSYC 499 DS: ADVISING/MENTORING) is beneficial for those who plan to go into helping professions (clinical, counseling psychology, school counseling, rehabilitation counseling, community counseling, social work, education, medicine, public health, etc.). Psychology majors who are Juniors or Seniors with at least a 3.0 GPA are eligible to apply. A two semester commitment for 3 credits per semester is required. Participation includes training in peer counseling, advising techniques, mentoring, career topics, graduation requirements, study skills, and referral to appropriate resources. Participation also includes actual advising and mentoring of freshmen and sophomore psychology majors as to course selection and degree planning. Hours are flexible. You must interview with Dr. Alan Whitlock to become a Peer Advisor. Email Dr. Whitlock for more details and an interview: whitlock@uidaho.edu
3) For internships related to Communication Studies, see Dr. Folwell or Dr. Marlow.
In addition, the University of Idaho Internships and Cooperative Education Office, which is located on the third floor of the Commons, can assist you in finding a wide variety of internships experiences.
