HIV Facts Overview: Since the identification of the HIV virus, a considerable amount of information has been learned. For example the transmission routes, aspects of replication, and variables related to prevention have been identified. However, as the virus continues to mutate, and increases in sexual behavior of individuals with AIDS in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community increases, knowledge of this disease for counselors has become critical. Goals: This section provides an overview of HIV and related disorders (e.g., AIDS). The readings are designed to provide you with information regarding the progression AIDS and how HIV impacts body systems. Objectives: Promote client’s knowledge, skills and attitudes consistent with the maintenance of health and the prevention of HIV/AIDS, TB, STDs and other communicable diseases. Understand and describe the health and behavioral problems related to substance use disorders including the transmission and prevention of HIV/AIDS, TB, STDs and other infectious diseases. Outcomes: To provide students’ with information related to the progression of HIV infection, and how the disease further progresses into AIDS. What does HIV do to T cells? b. Describe some symptoms a person might experience at each stage of HIV. c. How is HIV transmitted? What precautions might a person take to reduce the probability of becoming infected? d. When should a person be tested for HIV? Can you have a long latency period before HIV can be detected? Why or Why not? e. What are different types of tests for HIV? What are the tests checking for? How do they work? You can also look up information related to these tests on the web.
f. Can HIV be transmitted by casual
contact? Support your answer with evidence. What are some drugs used to
treat HIV? How does each work? g. There are a variety of different groups of drugs (e.g., Protease Inhibitors, Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors, etc) that are used to treat HIV/AIDS. Do a web search and generally describe how these drugs work. i. Do a web search on HIV/AIDS. Find a website that you found interesting. Then share it and the hyperlink with your instructor and the class in the discussion in Web Ct. Send all your answers to your instructor by email. Do not send attachments.
