Epidemiology Outside the United States

 Overview:  While HIV/AIDS is impacting the Unites States, other countries have been impacted significantly more.  This is especially true in Africa, Central Asia, and in Russia.  This section examines HIV/AIDS epidemiology in other countries outside the United States.

Goal:  This section is designed to provide you with information related to HIV/AIDS epidemiology throughout the world and how the epidemic has changed over time.

Objectives:  Through reviews of websites and writing papers, you will begin to understand the impact of HIV outside the United States.  These reports are provided by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Outcomes:  Show how the epidemiology of HIV/AIDS has changed across population groups throughout the world.

Required Readings
There are no required readings for this section except for what is listed in the Tasks section

Tasks:  While other web sites are provided, go to the U.N. aids site (unaids.org) and view the information.  Note the statistics in Africa, Central Asia, and the former Soviet Bloc Countries.  Again, note how the statistics have changed over time.  After you have completed this task go to the following website and look at some of the graphics and text regarding HIV/AIDS.  Open and look at the tables.  There is a lot of data here so search around.  Share your thoughts about these issues with your classmates in the Web-CT on-line discussion for this topic.

Then scroll down the page and click on Global Overview of the Epidemic.  Read the paper titled below.  You can also directly click on the link for AIDS Epidemic Update 2006;

Finally, for your interest, there a numerous other PowerPoint presentations and other sites where you can review information (links are below).  These are included to help you understand the severity of the epidemic.

After you have read these reports, write two papers.  One a brief summary (one page) of the articles and two, a reaction paper (max. one page) to these statistics.  Send both papers to the instructor by email (do not send as attachment).
