Course Description This course is designed to provide you with an overview of Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS), Tuberculosis (TB), and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs). In addition, this course is designed to assist you to in examining issues related to human sexuality, and biases about sexually related topics and lifestyles. Finally, you will be exposed to information related to high-risk behavior. Required Texts: Instead of the standard manual this class has used in the past, all esential reading material will be posted to the class site. This will conserve paper and spare you the cost. Reaction Papers: You will be required to complete several brief papers related to topics will you will encounter throughout the course. All papers are to be computer or type written. Please send your work directly to the instructors email. Do not send attachments. Copy and paste your material into a note. Thank you. Other Papers: You will also be required to complete several other papers (1-2 pages) related to topics you will encounter. All papers are to be computer or type written. NO MATERIAL MAY BE CUT AND PASTED FROM THE WEB. Movie Reaction Papers: You will be required to rent or purchase two movies that contains material related to individuals with HIV, AIDS, or other highly communicable diseases that are often fatal. An example might be Philadelphia. After watching each movie, you will be required to write a reaction paper 2-3 pages (Typed, Double Spaced) related to your feelings about the movie, and your feelings about the sexual issues/lifestyles/others that were related to the topics in the movie. The point of this topic is to make you examine YOUR concept of sexuality and sexual lifestyles, and identity concepts that make you feel uneasy. Send the same way as reaction papers. Discussions: Throughout the course you will be required to comment on some topics. Graduate Student Term Paper: Graduate students will be required to write a term paper on a sexually transmitted disease or sexual issue of your choice. You must use at least 10 recent (published within past 5 years) references from journal articles or books. Popular press (e.g., Time, Scientific American, Newspapers, etc) and Non-Governmental web sites will not count toward your total. You can use a maximum of 4 web sites in your count. NO MATERIAL MAY BE CUT AND PASTED FROM THE WEB. Exams and Quizzes: There will be two exams and one quiz (10 points) given throughout the course of the semester. Each will be open book, open note, and open person exams. That is, you can use any information you wish to help you. However, all questions and answers will be mixed. You will have ample time to complete the exam. However, there will be due dates when each exam is required to be turned in. Grading: All grading will be based
on the following scale
Cheating and Plagiarism: The policy for cheating in this class is clear. You will receive an "F" grade in the course. Further, cutting and pasting material from the www or another person's work will be considered cheating and result in an "F" grade. The department is also purchasing cheating software which will be available shortly. All prior papers from this class will be pasted into that data base. Thus, make sure submit your own work. Again, do not cheat in this class. |
