Tetrahydrocannabinol
(THC)
Overview:
This drug is derived from a particular type of hemp plant called
Cannabis Sativa and is commonly called Marijuana (Also spelled
Marihuana). Marijuana and related products (e.g., hashish and
charas) is the drug of choice for many individuals (especially youth
who cannot purchase alcohol). While the drug acts similarly as
alcohol, its primary site of action is within the synapse complex
rather than the entire neuron. Considering the level of use,
potential medicinal properties, etc. many states have decriminalized
or repealed a variety of marijuana laws
Goals: This
section is designed to provide a review of marijuana and related
compounds. It will also provide an examination of sites of
action and behavioral effects derived from THC.
