Sensation and PerceptionFundamental processes and variables in sensory, perceptual, and cognitive experiences of humans.

Have you ever wondered…

Why does the moon look larger when it’s near the horizon? Why do ice cream and beer make a bad taste combination?  How do animals perceive the world? What does the “loudness” button on my stereo really do? Why do paintings look three-dimensional? Is acupuncture for real? Why do things look farther away in the fog? Do other people see colors the way I do? Is reality objective or subjective?

Sensation and Perception is an area of scientific inquiry that spans psychology, biology, chemistry, physics, and artificial intelligence.   In this class you will learn how each of the five “classic” senses – as well as others you may not have heard of – contribute to our perception of reality. You will have the opportunity to find answers to many questions about yourself and the world around you. Most of all, you will have the opportunity to gain practical knowledge about perception that can enrich your everyday life.

Prerequisite: Psyc 218.
