Audio Transcript
Hello everyone, and welcome to Psychology 372, Physiological Psychology. My name is Steve Meier and I’m the instructor for the course.

During this section, what I’d like you to do is sit back go with me as we walk through the different parts of the course and get an idea about how a web based course works. The first thing I’d like you to do before you do anything else is click on the “new student start here” button. Basically, what that does is it gives me some information about some things that’s related to your computer. What it does is helps make sure that your computer meets all the necessary requirements you will need to complete the course.
So once you’ve done that, then come back and click on this audio file again and so you’ll get started.

Now that you’re back, let’s walk through a few things within the course. The first thing that you’ll see appear is the syllabus. The syllabus is located in a specific section within the class, with a set of PowerPoint slides. So, I’m not going to talk too much about it right now. However, it’s going to cover all the different aspects of the course.

Let’s click on the schedule. The schedule, as you can see here, contains all the different topics and sections that we’re discuss within the class. Let’s begin by clicking on lesson one, An Overview of Physiological Psychology.

When you do that, you will see that there are several different sections within this part. The first thing you will see is an introduction. It kind of gives you a little bit of an overview about what we’re going to be talking about. Just below that you will find some things that you are going to be expected to understand or be able to perform. Finally, I have included a variety of different terms and names and things that I believe are important you should definitely know when taking your exam.

On the right hand side, you will see a couple of things under what is called the “To Do List”. The To Do List will, first of all, contain the book reading or the chapter that you’re going to need to review. It will also require a second activity that relates to some brain structures that you will need to memorize. It will then have a link to the anatomy quizzes, which will be in part of Web CT. You can then go to WEB Ct. It will also have some study questions that you can take.

But, probably the most important part of this section are the lectures. The lectures are an audio file and a PowerPoint presentation that accompanies the audio file. So, if you click on the PowerPoint slides on the right hand side, they will come up. You will then click on the audio section and walk through the slides as I talk about each section. I will demonstrate that as we talk about the syllabus next time. So that kind of gives you a little bit of an overview of what the section is and kind of how it works.

So let’s click on the back button and go back to all the sections. As you can see in the schedule, there’s going to be about three major sections you need to do before you can take an exam. You should take your exam before you proceed on to the next section or you’re going to get lost. You can actually get out of touch with what you needed to do.

So, let’s move on a little bit and give you some contact information and tell you who I am. I am an Associate Professor at the University of Idaho. I am also the Director of the Addictions Training Program. My specific training and expertise is in Applied Psychology with specializations in addictions and high risk behaviors, specifically alcoholism. I also have considerable experience in neuroscience and cognitive neuroscience but my expertise and really a major interest is in psychopharmacology. I work a lot with addiction treatment agencies, do a lot of program evaluation, and I also teach courses that are related to high risk behavior, specifically sexually transmitted diseases. So that kind of gives you a little bit about me. I’ve also listed at the very top some contact information. If you need to actually come and see me, there’s detailed parking information. Click on the button and it takes you to a site that gives you information about where you go to get visitor’s permits and a variety of other things as well.

Well I hope you enjoy the course and that you learn a lot. You will need to really work hard at this class and we’ll talk a little bit about that as we get into the syllabus. So what I’d like you to do is fill out that information that I asked you for before. If you have done so, click on the schedule button and then move into lesson one group. Then click on the syllabus PowerPoint presentation that I’m going to give you.

We hope you have yourself a great day and we’ll be looking forward to talking with you soon.
