Overview
This course provides students with
an overview of ergonomics as it applied to the workplace. Ergonomics is a multifaceted discipline
that examines a variety of factors that affect human performance in the work
environment. Students in this course receive instruction in areas such as
biomechanics, work physiology, psychophysics, tool and work area design, and
work related musculoskeletal disorders. The attention given this latter topic
has increased dramatically in recent years.
The Bureau of Labor statistics reports that
62 percent of reported illness cases in 1995 were the result of repeated
trauma. Historical data reveal that the frequency of musculoskeletal
disorders is increasing.
In addition to those already mentioned, students
will review developments in a job hazard analyses, work evaluation methods,
and surveillance methods for musculoskeletal disorders.
