  • The annual James A. McClure Lectures on Science and Public Policy presents Dr. Lester M. Crawford, Commissioner of the FDA, speaking on the topic of "The Interaction of Science and Policy to Enhance Food Safety and Security." Dr. Crawford's lecture will be delivered Thursday, September 29th at 7:00 pm in the Administration Auditorium. For additional event information, contact Professor Patrick Wilson.

  • Congratulations to Political Science major Paige Allen, winner of the College of Arts and Sciences Lindley Award for 2004-2005! The Lindley Award is given annually to the best graduating student in the College and we couldn't be more proud of Paige. Paige was also the winner of the Department's 2004-2005 Pi Sigma Alpha award with her excellent paper on presidential use of the 'bully pulpit.'

  • Congratulations to Political Science major Gina Baldwin who is the recipient of the Willis E. Sullivan III Memorial Study Abroad Scholarship to study abroad in France during the academic year 2005-2006. Gina is also working with Professor Brandon Rottinghaus on an academic journal article titled "Voting Behind Bars: Practices of Criminal Incarceration and Enfranchisement" that is currently under review.

  • Professor Sandra Reineke was invited to participate in this year's American Political Science Pre-Conference organized by the Women's Political Caucus for Political Science on August 31, 2005 at Howard University in Washington, DC. She was also invited to attend another APSA Pre-Conference scheduled the same day and organized by the Women and Politics Institute at American University, likewise located in Washington, DC. She will be speaking about her research on citizenship rights and gender in France at both conferences.

  • Professor Colleen Mack-Canty is presenting a paper titled, "Environmentalism and Postcolonial Feminism: Examples of Third World Women's Resistance" at the Pacific Northwest Political Science Association Annual Meeting in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

  • Professor Brandon Rottinghaus is working on a book chapter (with Journalism and Mass Media Professor Kenton Bird ) titled "Keeping You Informed Unintentionally: College Aged Viewers of the Daily Show and the Effects of Humor on News Seeking, Consumption and Retention" for an edited book entitled Humor and Modern American Politics. The work is derived from several focus groups with University of Idaho students. He also presented a paper at the American Political Science Conference (APSA) titled "The Provisional Pulpit: Presidential (Non) Leadership of Public Opinion from Eisenhower to Clinton."

  • The Bureau of Public Affairs Research sponsored a panel discussion on the nomination and confirmation of Judge John Roberts to the United States Supreme Court on September 8th. The panelists discussed a wide range of political and legal issues associated with the possible confirmation of Judge Roberts to the high court and will entertain questions. Panelists included: Don Crowley, Professor of Political Science; Richard Seamon, Associate Professor of Law; Russell Miller, Associate Professor of Law; Brandon Rottinghaus, Assistant Professor of Political Science.

  • Professors Don Crowley and Brandon Rottinghaus were invited to write guest editorial columns for the Idaho Statesman's special discussion on President Bush's push to promote his privatization policy for Social Security.   • Brandon Rottinghaus, Assistant Professor, and colleagues at Washington State University and in Journalism and Mass Media (at Idaho) have conducted a pre-election poll indicating that John Kerry has a slight edge in the vote of the students at U of I and WSU. More than 80% indicated they were registered to vote and 60% indicated they were "very likely" to vote.

  • Professor Colleen Mack-Canty presented a paper (co-authored with Sue Wright) titled "Feminist Family Values" at the Association for Research on Mothering (ARM) Conference at York University in Toronto.
     
  • Professors Don Crowley and Patrick Wilson both participated in the 2004 Annual Conference of the Pacific Northwest Political Science Association in Portland.  Dr. Crowley participated in a roundtable discussion on the Supreme Court and Dr. Wilson presented a paper titled "Forward to the Past:  State Governments, the ESA and Delisted Species."
     
  • Professor Brandon Rottinghaus was asked to join a working group founded by the Brennan Center for Justice at the New York University School of Law investigating the effects of incarceration and felon disenfranchisement on democracy in the United States and abroad.  See the Brennan Center's link at:  http://www.brennancenter.org/
     
  • Professor Lisa Carlson presented a paper (co-authored with Raymond Dacey) titled "Sequential Analysis of Deterrence Games and the 2003 U.S.-Iraq War" at the 2004 Annual Meeting of the American Political Science Association in Chicago, Illinois.
