The following minimum academic criteria must be fulfilled in order to be considered for membership in Phi Beta Kappa.
Course requirements:
16 total credits of humanities and social sciences, with no fewer than 7 credits
of humanities and no fewer than 7 credits of social sciences.10 credits of mathematics/sciences
16 credits (minimum) of one foreign language through the intermediate level or 4 full years of high school language. Literature in Translation, European Union, and International Film courses cannot be used to meet this requirement.
Double majors (CLASS or Science and another college) must complete a minimum of 90 liberal arts credits.
Enrollment is limited to 15% of the CLASS/Science graduating class/ no more than one-half of this quota may be juniors.
For Juniors:
3.75 gpa (based on their "overall" gpa)
Juniors shall be presented who have completed one full semester of their junior year, and who have been in residence at least five semesters. All PBK requirements must be completed prior to the spring semester in which they are elected.
For Seniors:
3.65 gpa for seniors in residence at least 4 semesters at graduation (overall gpa)
3.50 gpa for seniors in residence at least 7 semesters at graduation (overall gpa)
In addition to these minimum requirements, initiates will be determined by other factors, i.e., citizenship, scholastic rigor, etc.
