To Whom It May Concern:
This is a letter of recommendation for Brij Kul Deepak. Deepak is both a talented educator and a talented toymaker. This combination of skills makes his workshops compelling and exciting. Deepak's desire to communicate the joy he's found through the creation of traditional Indian toys is infectious. Here in Silicon Valley, where most children grow up with computers, one would expect a hint of cynicism from children confronted with traditional toys made from natural materials. But that was not the case! Deepak had children cheering at their own ability to create magic, sounds, wiggles, and paintings. During his "Magic Window" workshop, for instance, both children and adults volunteered to show off their simple paper windows. Deepak's enthusiasm created an atmosphere of silliness and wonder that allowed people to laugh at themselves. Besides being great fun, the toys are educational. Children learn about the nature of plants when they paint with petals; a lesson on the persistence of vision is implicit in the creation of the moving bird; and a beautiful example of Indian art is taught when people make paintings with rice, petals, leaves, and beans.
Having Brij Kul Deepak at the Museum was a wonderful experience for our visitors and for us. We were able to reach a new audience through his workshops and offer a valuable experience to our regular visitors.
Sincerely
