Course Purpose:
The course provides an overview of physical, cognitive, emotional, and
social development in children from birth through adolescence. We will
cover theory and research in the field of child development with a
focus on understanding which factors promote and which factors impede
healthy development. The course highlights how adults involved in the
care/ education of children can use this knowledge to enhance their
interactions and work with children.
Learning
Objectives: After completing this course you will:
know the major theories in the field of child
development
be able to apply theoretical knowledge to address
practical issues related to children and families
be critical thinkers about social policy that
affects children and families
understand aspects of your own development and
how this shaped your outcomes
be prepared for advanced study in disciplines
related to child development
Learning Modules: Each chapter has audio lecture
presentations discussing each chapter that have been recorded in flash
format. Film clips and YouTube movies are embedded in the
presentations to illustrate key concepts. You are required to read
chapters in the text and complete lecture presentations each week.
Exams:
Five midterm exams will be given during the semester.
These exams will be administered online with
access to the exam on
BlackboardExams are administered on scheduled
dates throughout the semester, each exam is made up of 50 multiple
choice questions and you have 50 minutes to complete the exam.
Exam questions are drawn from a large bank of pre-selected questions so
no two exams are identical.
it is your responsibility to take the exam at the
scheduled time -- every time!
a 25% reduction in grade may
be applied to make-up exams
permission must be sought for
a make-up within 48 hours of the missed exam and are only
allowed in the case of illness and emergency
make-ups all take place on
pre-scheduled make-up dates

Homework:
Short homework assignments (on-line questions) will be assigned with each
chapter.

Extra-credit:
Optional extra credit is available on a limited basis. Extra credit can be earned by participating in Psychology
Experiments, one hour earns you 10 points extra credit.
You can earn a
MAXIMUM of 40 points
extra credit toward your grade during the semester.
