Lionel Hampton School of
Music
MISSION, GOALS, AND VISION
MISSION
The mission of the Lionel Hampton School of Music (LHSOM) of the University
of Idaho is to serve as a professional school of choice in Idaho for undergraduate
and graduate music programs and as an academic department within the College
of Letters and Science offering liberal studies in music. (Revised and adopted,
1/7/00)
GOALS
As a means of fulfilling its mission, the LHSOM will:
1. Maintain a faculty of specialists of the greatest possible
competence, musical attainments, and professional prominence,
who are committed to teaching, musical performance, scholarly
activities, and service.
2. Offer undergraduate and graduate programs of excellent quality in selected
fields of music, including musical performance, composition, scholarship, and
pedagogy so that the students may be prepared for a lifetime of musical and
intellectual growth and be equipped with the insights and skills needed in
their lives and professions.
3. Identify, recruit, encourage, and reward through financial assistance, promising
young musicians and consider their needs as individuals in designing academic
programs.
4. Advance the art of music through concerts and recitals, creative and compositional
activities, and scholarship, including research in such applied fields as performance
practices, styles, and media.
5. Provide courses and programs in music as a liberal art, as well as opportunities
for students in other fields to participate in musical organizations.
6. Contribute to the cultural life of the campus, community, state, and region
through concerts, recitals, and musical productions of the highest integrity
so that the rich heritage of music as a performing art may be readily available
to all.
7. Extend all possible assistance to the elementary and secondary schools of
the state, including:
- Encouraging young musicians to develop their creative and compositional
skills;
- Developing effective and innovative music education programs;
- Providing workshops and clinics to assist students and teachers
in the improvement of their performance skills;
- Participating in festivals and similar events in such capacities
as clinicians, conductors, performers, and adjudicators; and
- Encouraging the creation of excellent musical compositions that
are within the performance capabilities of public school students.

VISION
The School of Music will be a musically comprehensive, nationally competitive
and respected learning environment. The School will maintain viable, diverse
and stable enrollments in its undergraduate and graduate programs through a
balance of high standards, aggressive recruitment, selective admission, and
realistic retention policies. Students will be intellectually curious, motivated
learners working within a rigorous, high quality curriculum. Because the faculty
will be visionary educators, scholars, and musicians, students will be challenged
to achieve high scholastic and artistic goals. Together, the faculty and students
will create an atmosphere of professional awareness, mutual support, corroboration
and outreach. As a result, the School's alumni will be versatile musicians,
prepared to pursue successful, fulfilling careers of their choosing. (adopted
