Lionel Hampton School of Music
Ensemble Information
Musical performance is an integral part of student and campus life
at the University of Idaho. Here at the Lionel Hampton School of
Music, our desire is to provide an opportunity for everyone to contribute
their musical talent. In fact, we have a musical organization to
fit the interests
of most everyone!
Ensemble Audition Information
The Vandaleer Concert Choir (MusA
116/316), directed by Michele
Paise, is open to all students by audition. Vandaleers performs
classical music of all eras and genres, from Gregorian chant to contemporary
choral works as well as folk songs and ethnic repertoire from the
United States and around the globe. In addition to a regular campus
concert schedule, Vandaleers customarily makes a concert tour in
the Northwest region each year. Past concert tours have also taken
the ensemble to Europe, South America, Washington D.C. and New York
City.
Mon, Wed, Fri 1:30 - 2:20 p.m. Tuesday 2:00 - 3:15 p.m.
The University Chorus (MusA 117/317), directed by Chris Thompson, is open to University students and adult community members
without an audition. The chorus rehearses on Monday, Wednesday and
Friday at 2:30 and
frequently performs masterworks of the choral repertoire with the
University Orchestra or
other University instrumental
ensembles.
Mon/Wed/Fri
2:30 - 3:20 p.m.
The
award-winning jazz choir program, under the direction of Dan
Bukvich, is the largest of
its kind in the country, involving over 200 students each semester.
The program consists of four ensembles. Jazz Choir I (MusA
118/318) is a large choir of nearly two hundred singers that
performs custom choral arrangements of various styles with the
assistance of fifteen to twenty instrumentalists. It rehearses
three hours per week and is open to all university students without
an audition. Jazz Choir II (MusA 365) is a highly select
small vocal jazz ensemble, specializing in close harmony
arrangements and choral versions of instrumental jazz standards.
This group rehearses two hours per week and serves as the premier
touring jazz choral ensemble at the
University of
Idaho.
Membership in Jazz Choir II is strictly by invitation of the
director.
With some exceptions, singers in
the small vocal jazz ensemble are selected from within the
membership of Jazz Choir I.

Jazz Choir II Mon/Wed

The Vandal Marching
Band (MusA 119/319), directed by Torrey
Lawrence, is open to all students during
the Fall semester (no auditions required). The Idaho band has a reputation that
extends far outside the Northwest. Over the years, it has performed for audiences
at Idaho football games throughout the West, as well as at professional games
in San Francisco, Vancouver, B.C., and Seattle. The group's rehearsals are geared
to the busy student's schedule. It is our practice to have the West's finest
marching band with the minimum amount of rehearsal. Be assured that it is possible
to be a member and get good grades, regardless of major. One feature that is
particularly attractive to students is the awarding of Service Grants for each
student participating in the band. First and second year students will receive
$200.00 at second semester registration; students with three or more years in
the band will receive $300.00.
