AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

In-Person Auditions
Contact our music office (music@uidaho.edu, 208-885-6231 or 1-88-88-UIDAHO ext. 6231) to schedule an audition.

The School of Music awards merit-based scholarships to more than one hundred deserving students each year. Most of these awards go to music majors, but occasionally non-majors and minors receive some assistance. Awards are made based on musical merit and departmental priorities; financial need is not usually a factor. Students who want to be considered for merit scholarships must audition for the School of Music faculty prior to their initial enrollment at the UI. Students should audition by February 28, 2009 for entrance the Fall 2009.

Auditions are required for admission to all degree programs in music.  Students may schedule audition times during the week day by contacting us at 208-885-6231 or music@uidaho.edu or send in a recorded audition on audio tape, CD or DVD.

Vocalists are welcome to bring their own accompanist. If this is not possible, a pianist will be provided to sight-read the accompaniment. Instrumental auditions are normally heard unaccompanied.

The School of Music practice rooms are located on the second and third floors of Ridenbaugh Hall, just a block from the music building. Sixteen unlocked rooms are available on a first-come first-served basis. A warm-up room in the music building will be available for your use one half-hour before your scheduled audition.

Please note: In order to receive full consideration for all UI financial assistance including need-based scholarships, students must audition for the Lionel Hampton School of Music faculty by February 28, 2009.

Recorded Auditions
Since in-person auditions are not possible for all students, we also welcome auditions via cassette tape or CD. Please mark your recording clearly with your name and instrument or voice type. If you are auditioning on more than one instrument, put each instrument audition on a separate cassette or CD. Remember to listen to the copy of your recording before sending it; submitted recordings sometimes are inaudible! All recordings become the property of the Lionel Hampton School of Music and will not be returned.

When you send a recording, please fill out our Online Audition Form.
