Focus this semester: Reference and Referring

This is an advanced course in philosophical semantics and pragmatics. We will spend the first half of the semester developing an understanding of traditional concerns in linguistics and the philosophy of language. The second half of the semester will be devoted to examining the relationship of reference, and in particular, its connection with consciousness.

While there are no prerequisites, it is recommended that you have experience with philosophy. This could take the form of one of our courses (e.g., Belief & Reality, logic, another advanced course) or self-study. The course is also writing-intensive, with many papers written over the course of the semester.
