Monstrous Media Propaganda Mini Project

Imagine yourself as working for a PR firm contracted to develop a media campaign related to a current social issue, a historical issue or topic covered in this class, a myth or story covered in this class….  Your job is to turn the complex social issue into a clear-cut case of good vs. evil, heroes vs. monsters: obfuscate, distort, create fear where once stood rationality, etc., through the use of monstrosity.

Working alone, produce one of the following:
a) A poster
b) A pamphlet
c) Three or more 30 second radio spots
d) An advertising song/jingle
e) ?  (Check with me at least one week in advance if you have another idea)

Or, working in a pair or as a group, produce one of the following:
a) A short film
b) A preview for a (non-existent) film
c) Two TV ads
d) ?  (Check with me at least two weeks in advance if you have another idea)

Groups MUST clear projects and the number of group members with me at least two weeks in advance.

Group projects should represent at least the same amount of effort individuals invest in their projects, times the number of people in the group.

In addition to the media itself, each individual or group must also produce and hand in with the media:

1) A brief (1-2 page) essay that:
a) Summarizes the issue, in a paragraph or two
b) Describes the client your group will prepare the campaign for. Choose and describe a real group.
c) Analyzes the audiences with a stake in this topic and then describes the specific audience you hope to persuade
d) Summarizes your strategy and explains how, in very specific terms, you created your monster to represent (and most likely distort) cultural ideas central to the social issue.
e) Group projects must summarize who contributed which elements to the project.

A NOTE ON SOURCES:  These projects are not to be cut/paste assignments: the vast amount of the work must be your own and not stuff ripped off of the web etc.
