The Honorable
Sen. James A. McClure
The
Honorable Sen. James A. McClure, widely acknowledged for his expertise
in energy and natural resource matters, represented the people of Idaho in
the U.S. Congress for almost a quarter century. After serving three terms
in the Idaho State Senate, he was first elected to the U.S. House of
Representatives in 1966 and the Senate in 1972, where he served until his
retirement in 1991.
During his time in Congress, Sen. McClure chaired the Senate Energy and
Natural Resources Committee and gained wide recognition as an authority on
national and international policy issues surrounding nuclear, natural gas,
oil and electrical energy. He was a member of the Senate Select Committee
investigating the Iran/Contra Affair and was a member of the Helsinki
Commission on Human Rights.
Alumni of the University of Idaho, Sen. McClure and his wife Louise are
active and longtime supporters of the University. They are past members of
the College of Letters & Science Advisory Board, and were honorary chairs
of the Campaign for Idaho Steering Committee.
