The data set contains over 1500 statewise variables on the states of India for the years 1960 through the mid-1980s. A large portion comes from the Indian censuses of 1961, 1971, and 1981. Included are variables measuring economic development, physical quality of life, urbanization, population, cultural diversity, and social structure. The data set also included political measures particularly statewise election results for both Lok Sabha and legislative assembly elections for the period. Other political data include measures of state assembly effectiveness based on the number and type of questions raised in floor debate. There are a large number of variables measuring political violence in India over the period based on Home Ministry statistics on number of riots and arrest in demonstrations. Lastly, a special quality of the data set is the wide variety of variables measuring the quality and effectiveness of family planning programs across the Indian states.
