A good dictionary (The American Heritage Dictionary, third edition, which is also available for WINDOWS, is recommended). The OED is available on-line through the UI library.

1. Attendance: tests will be about information covered in class and in the book. Good class participation will count toward your grade. Ask questions. If you have questions about the material and cannot come to my office hour please contact me by e-mail. Homework assignments* (below) are to be turned in at the class session; you may work together on the homework; if you do please put both (or all) names on the assignment.
2. Course Goal: to learn more words and to learn about words.
3. Grades will be based on examinations: 300 points; class participation (variable points in your favor); the word journal (10 points; see below: this is required for an "A"); and homework (10 points). Homework may be done in groups or pairs, provided you work together (just put both or all names on the paper). The first examination will be on Part One: 1-3; the second on Part Two: 1- 4; the third (=the final) on Part Three: 1-6.

Week I Jan 27 Introduction -- pre-test (on web) -- Latin plurals-- fun with words Intro to Unit I Read pp 1-3; * turn in exercise C p. 4-5; read pp. 5-7 try some each in exercises on pp. 7-10. Study vocabulary 11-12. For next time:* turn in exercise 3 A & B pp. 12-13; read 18-19.

WORD JOURNAL
Project: for extra credit (up to 10 points) a word journal (see a sample and check out WORDS) to be turned in during the month of April of: A) 20 interesting words with their sources (where you found them) or B) a list of 20 or so important or interesting words in your major, including (in either A or B) a quotation using each word, its meaning in brief and origin (etymology) . These will be accepted late (until the final, but no later than) and early.
