Greek-Latin Comparisons: Syntax
1 credit: pass/fail. The course will meet once a week.
The purpose of this lab is to work on grammatical "constructions" and to understand them better through comparisons of Greek and Latin Usages.
Work in teams of two or more for all assignments.
Unit I: Participles (two or three weeks)
Comparison of the forms and uses; contrasts in the sheer quantity of the Greek over the Latin.
Assignment: Look over the material in Allen and Greenough(309-316) and Smyth (454-479)
Find examples of the various uses in your readings of Greek and Latin.
Unit II: Cases (four or five weeks)
Readings: for Latin: Latin 369 Study guide on http://www.its.uidaho.edu/luschnig/
for Greek: Luschnig pp. 328-340
Collect examples from you readings in Latin and Greek.
Unit III Verbs (four or five weeks)
Tenses and Moods
Readings in Smyth and Allen and Greenough
Collect examples.
Unit IV Readings (four weeks)
Cicero and Xenophon, etc.
Work on particles, word order, pronouns.
Final assignment: comparison of two texts. Write down your thoughts on them (1 page).
