English Word Origins

Textbooks: Etymidion and a good dictionary (The American Heritage Dictionary, third edition, which is also available for WINDOWS, is recommended). The Study Packet contains sample tests and reviews (available at the bookstore and on the WEB http://www.ls.uidaho.edu/luschnig/).   See also WEEK'S WORDS  and WORDS.

1. Attendance: tests will be about information covered in class and in the book. Good class participation will count toward your grade. Ask questions. If you have questions about the material and cannot come to my office hour please contact me by e-mail.

2. Course Goal: to learn more words and to learn about words.

3. Grades will be based on examinations: 300 points; quizzes and homework about 20- 40 points; and the word journal (10 points; see below). The first examination will be on chapters 1-3; the second on chapters 4-7; the third (=the final) on chapters 8-13. Quizzes will be given on vocabulary, prefixes, suffixes: there will be two days' notice. You may drop the lowest quiz.

Project: required a word journal ( Sample) to be turned in by 3 December: 20-25 interesting words with their sources (where you found them), a quotation using them, their meanings in brief and origins (etymologies). (10 points). These will be accepted late (until the final) and early, anytime after October 1.
