GREEK 341 -- ELEMENTARY GREEK

Fall 2002

Course goal: To begin to learn to read classical Greek. Not an easy business, but worth it.

Professor: C. Luschnig, AD 310A, luschnig@uidaho.edu -- office hours as posted (before class or 1:30-2:00 MTWQ).

Required Textbooks:

If you are taking the lab (349) which you should take (if you want to, need the credit or learn better aurally): there is a workbook at the bookstore and 15 tapes in the lab.

Grading: grades will be based on performance in class (attendance is required but is not sufficient; it should be accompanied by preparation of the assignment :) and attentiveness: otherwise they call it "seat time" in the trade), homework assignments to be turned in on time and quizzes and tests.  In-class tests will be accompanied by a take-home.

Week III (9-12 September)

Monday 5 min. quiz on verbs. Turn in take-home assignment on verbs.  More work on nouns.

For Tuesday: Study pp 39-41. Learn the article. Study the vocabulary. The tape may be helpful for this. Ex. 47 # 1 (2, 6, 7, 1, 9). In class: practice of nouns. (study guide: 7-9)

T In class: exercises: parsing and translating

For Wednesday: 2a, 2b (p. 47). Begin sentences on p. 49.

W Translating, practice, review.

For Thursday: read Syntax points 1-4 pp. 48-9. Sentences pp. 49-50: translate at least 10.

Q Readings (prepared and at sight). Hints on write in Greek.

Week XII (11-15 November) -- Third Declension Nouns

M Know the basic endings (stg. 31! Tape 6) Be able to decline with the article any nouns of the consonant type. Ex. p. 128 #21-40 and 129 # 16-29.
