Present Subjunctive

Hortatory  Jussive  Purpose

I Forms: give the present indicative and subjunctive, active and passive in the person and number indicated.

                    We seat all friars. A mnemonic device for the present subjunctive.

Study the Present subjunctive. Review indirect statement.

A. Let us = HORTATORY SUBJUNCTIVE. Present Subjunctive, first person plural.

B. Let her/him/them = JUSSIVE SUBJUNCTIVE.

C. So that, in order that/to, to = PURPOSE: ut, ne + the present or imperfect subjunctive. In this lesson use the PRESENT subjunctive.

DO NOT TRANSLATE THE WORDS IN BRACKETS.

 

II Translate:

1. Let us now praise famous men.

2. Let Cicero do it, in order that we may be free of fear. ("be free of" = careo, carere + abl.)

3. Let us not say that this is true.

4. Let the wise man know that nature is the best leader.

5. Cicero is sending this book to Atticus in order to make his [Atticus'] old age as happy as possible. ("as ------ as possible" = quam + the superlative)

6. Atticus is coming to Athens in order to study  philosophy. ("study" = studeo + dative)

7. We both have said and will say many [things] so that we may show our skill ("skill" = ars, artis, f.)

8. Let each [man] have his own [things].

9. The leader will say those [things] to you so that you may not flee.

10. Let them come here  so that they may see the king.  (i.e. hither, to this place = huc)
