The Muses were not originally "Muses of this or that", but were beautiful singers who accompanied Apollos lyre and sang for the gods and inspired mortals. Later they were given attributes and particular subjects:
- Clio, the Muse of History
- Calliope, the Muse of Epic Poetry
- Erato, the Muse of lyric and mime
- Euterpe, the Muse of lyric and music
- Melpomene, the Muse of tragedy
- Polyhymnia, the Muse of sacred music and song
- Terpsichore, the Muse of choral song and dance
- Thalia, the Muse of comedy
- Urania, the Muse of astronomy
