Review for first test: What you should know
1. All suffixes: pp. 34-5, 37, 50, 52, 67-8. Know which suffixes form nouns and which form adjectives. Know the meaning and be able to form 2 words using each.
- As a review exercise fill in the chart on pp 67-8. Tell part of speech; meaning and give examples:
- E.g. -al adj. "of, concerning" vital, verbal, special
- Add -ism and -ist to the list (see p. 52).
2. Be able to form the Latin plurals of nouns of the various declensions. Learn the plurals of common third declension words like appendix, index (-ices); genus, corpus, opus (base + -a)
- Sing. -ix, -ex Pl. -ices
- matrix matrices
3. Go over the words in your daily lists (today's words are...). Words like secular, sesquipedalian, specious, gratis, uxorious, virago, ugsome, lacuna etc.
4. Know the rules for and examples of simple changes pp. 22-23 and throw an eye on the examples of unpredictable changes on p. 26.
5. Vocabulary. Know all words in the vocabulary lists on pp. 27, 40, 53, 64-66. Know meanings, bases and be able to give two or three English words derived from each.
Other suggestions:
- Try the sample test.
- Try the exercises on pp. 59-63 of the textbook.
- Using the lists on pp. 67-8 try to form English words from each of the Latin words. If in doubt, use the handout on vocabulary with examples.
