Students in this course will examine a number of current ethical problems such as ethics in medicine and science, business, the law, and the media. Issues about the impact of violence on society, capital punishment, cultural diversity, and gender equality will also be explored. Systems of moral thought and personal virtue will be linked to real life through storytelling and story analysis. The textbook for the course draws on the plots of dozens of interesting films, stories, novels, and popular television shows to illustrate moral theories, issues, and dilemmas. Clips from these and other films and stories will be included in class discussion. Students will write short film analysis papers on feature length showings.
