Gender, Race, and Science

Spring 1999

Instructor: Kathryn Paxton George (885-7107)

Discussion Group

This is a capstone course devoted to mastery of the philosophical essay. Topics vary and the faculty of Philosophy teach the course in rotation, bringing their research to the classroom. For several years I have been studying sexism and science, especially in the areas of medicine, biology, nutrition, and agriculture. To a lesser degree I have also studied the racial biases in these areas. Students in this course will be expected to write a 20-25 page research paper on one of five topic areas defined in the collection of essays that we will use as our guide to discovering more about the issues of gender and racial bias in science. From the research paper, students will then give an oral seminar presenting their work. The course will proceed in seminar format, using discussion, short written and oral weekly or daily assignments. If I am able to obtain them, we will also view some films on these issues. The proposed schedule for the course may vary depending upon number of enrollees. Graduate students may obtain graduate credit by enrolling in Interdisciplinary Studies 504.

Professor Nancy Tuana will speak at our class on Thursday, April 15, 1999, on the topic of "Revaluing Science."  Professor Tuana is editor of the feminist journal Hypatia.  See http://www.is.csupomona.edu/~ljshrage/HYPATIA/INDEX.HTM
