Alice and Moral Virtue in Aristotle Example
Alice is walking down the street one evening. Alice is 5'2" tall and weighs 110 pounds. She passes an alley where she sees a gang of five strapping young men attacking a lone man. She immediately jumps into the fray to try to save the victim.
Would Aristotle say Alice possesses the virtue of courage?
Explain why or why not based on Book 2 of the Nicomachean Ethics. Please consider things such as:
1. a virtue as a habit or trained faculty
2. a virtue giving pleasure to the virtuous person
3. a virtue as a means between extremes - which includes
mean between excess and defect
mean relative to us as people
mean relative to the nature of the thing itself - area of behavior
hitting the mean as difficult
not everything in moderation
