is available to graduates of Idaho high schools who have completed at least
one year of college.
To be eligible for the scholarship, students must
either be majoring in journalism or communication, or working for a college
or professional media outlet in addition to their studies. The scholarship
money is paid directly to the student’s college or university, to cover
student fees, tuition or other expenses.
The scholarship is given in honor of the late Don
Watkins, a former newspaperman and press secretary to Idaho Gov. John Evans,
who died in 1981. It is funded by a permanent endowment fund set up by the
Press Club through the Idaho Community Foundation in Watkins’ honor.
“Part of the Idaho Press Club’s mission is to
promote excellence in journalism,” said Idaho Press Club president Betsy
Russell. “We want to recognize promising, committed future journalists and
help them complete their education.”
To apply, students should submit a one-page
resume listing their related work experience; an essay of up to 500 words
explaining their interest in a journalism or communications career; a copy
of their college transcripts through the 2007 fall semester, including

television candidates are asked to submit a recording of up to three of
their best news stories, up to a maximum length of 15 minutes.
