Courses required by all School of Journalism
and Mass Media majors

Things you
should know about JAMM degrees:
1. You may not double major or
major and minor in JAMM; however, you are encouraged to major
in one JAMM degree and declare a second degree in a different
department. If you are a JAMM
major and wish to declare a minor, it also needs to be from a
different department.
Our accrediting body, the Accrediting
Council for Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC) limits
students to no more than 48 credits in journalism and media courses.
The remaining 80 credits must be earned outside of JAMM, and
65 of those must be in the liberal arts and sciences.
Because our majors require at least 42 credits and our minors soon
will require 21 credits, it would be impossible to earn both a major
and minor within JAMM without exceeding the 48-credit ceiling.
However, all of our degrees require 9 credits of JAMM
electives. That means, theoretically, that as an advertising major,
you could take three public relations courses (9 credits) and
acquire valuable PR skills without exceeding the limit. However, you
will need a 21-credit minor or emphasis area outside of JAMM in a
field of interest to you in order to graduate. |
2. Courses
must be taken in sequence and all courses are not offered every semester.
3. It is not
possible to complete any JAMM sequence in one year.
4. JAMM 100
and 121 are offered every semester. They are also programmed prerequisites for
all
JAMM classes. You will need to complete these two classes before taking other JAMM classes.
5. To register for Internship, Practicum or
Directed Study, you must first fill out forms and receive
department approval.
6.
A minimum cumulative university grade-point average of 2.50 is required for a
JAMM degree.

What is PR?
Public Relations is the management function that establishes and
maintains mutually beneficial relationships between an organization and
the publics on whom its success or failure depends.
Public Relations is a profession
deeply involved with developing written materials (news releases,
newsletters, brochures, etc.) to be used for an organization’s various
publics. It also involves understanding and working with the news media
to both promote and protect the client; analyzing and interpreting
public opinion; counseling management on policy decisions; researching
planning and implementing programs; plus managing the people and
resources needed to carry out the PR function.
PR is frequently confused with
marketing (identifying human needs and wants then offering products to
satisfy those needs and wants) and advertising (controlled information
placed in the news media by identified sponsors who pay for the time or
space). It is neither. |
