UI Theatre Production Selected to Perform at the John F. Kennedy Center

March 10, 2006

MOSCOW, Idaho – The University of Idaho’s production of “Boy Gets Girl” has been chosen as one of only four university productions from across the nation to be showcased at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., April 19 and 20 as a part of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.

Over 1,500 participating productions from around the country compete each year to be part of the festival. Each production is seen by a regional selection team, from which approximately 60 regional finalist productions are showcased at one of the eight regional festivals. The 60 finalists then are seen by four members of the national selection team of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival over an eight week period. It is from this group that the four productions are chosen as national finalists.

“It is the highest honor a university theatre production can receive,” said David Lee-Painter, chair of the UI Department of Theatre and Film. “It is a privilege for our program to represent UI and our state on the national stage. It is a great testament to the talent of our students and faculty. Robert (Caisley) and his design team, cast and crew have created an amazing piece of theatre that we are very proud of.”

In addition to having the play showcased on the national stage, several UI Department of Theatre & Film students will travel to the Kennedy Center in April as national finalists in their respective discipline areas.

Emily Frederick, junior BFA candidate from Coeur d'Alene, will compete in make-up design, while graduate student Angela Bengford will compete in scenic design. They will compete against seven other students from around the nation for scholarship and internship opportunities.

UI senior Angela Renaldo, from St. Maries, won the regional stage management competition and graduate student Paul Kalina was selected as the outstanding student director by the Society of Stage Directors & Choreographers. They will take master classes and work on new short plays while in residence in D.C.

In addition, playwright David Eames-Harlan’s 10 minute play, “By Design,” was selected as the region’s winner and will have his play workshopped at the national conference. UI Theatre & Film Professor Dean Panttaja received a nomination for the National Lighting Design Fellowship.
