Creative Writing Emphasis

Curriculum Check Sheet for ’07 – ‘08

Here is one of the our four emphases to use as a loose guide for graduating in four years. Majors do not need to follow these plans exactly, but these are strategies for successful completion of degree requirements; however, all students need to consult every semester with their advisors to make sure they are on track.

CREATIVE WRITING EMPHASIS (39 CR)

Foundations (3 cr)

     Engl 210  Introduction to Literary Theory (3 cr)

Literary History (12 cr)

     Engl 257  Literature of Western Civilization (3 cr)
     OR
     Engl 258  Literature of Western Civilization (3 cr)

   
 LITERATURE BEFORE  1800

     Engl 345  Shakespeare or another course in literature before 1800 (3 cr)

    Two courses from the following (6 cr):

     Engl 341 Survey of British Literature (3)
     Engl 342 Survey of British Literature (3)
     Engl 343 Survey of American Literature (3)
     Engl 344 Survey of American Literature (3)

    Genre Craft/Workshop Courses: (15 cr)

    The student must take a full numerical sequence in one genre
     (291/391/491, poetry; 292/392/492, fiction; or 293/393/493, nonfiction). 
     This would be his/her major genre.  In addition, the student must take
     two additional courses in creative writing, in other genre(s), at the
     200- or 300-level.

     Courses in the three sequences include the following:

     ENGL 291 Creative Writing: Poetry
     ENGL 292 Creative Writing: Fiction
     ENGL 293 Creative Writing: Nonfiction
     ENGL 391 Intermediate Poetry Writing
     ENGL 392 Intermediate Fiction Writing
     ENGL 393 Intermediate Nonfiction Writing
     ENGL 491 Advanced Poetry Writing
     ENGL 492 Advanced Fiction Writing
     ENGL 493 Advanced Nonfiction Writing

Elective (6 cr)

     Two courses at the 400-level, one of which must be in modern or contemporary literature and one of which must be in non-canonical or under-represented literatures (a single course may fulfill both these subject requirements with adviser’s approval) (6 cr)

Capstone (3 cr)

    Engl 490  Senior Seminar (3 cr)

                   Required course work includes the university requirements [see regulation J-3 see

                   general requirements for the B.A. degree.
