Membership Information

There are two categories of membership: active and associate. Active membership is available, in general, to students with a minimum of a B or equivalent average in English, who rank at least in the highest thirty-five percent of their class in general scholarship, and who are entering their third semester of  college work. (Local chapters may raise, but not lower, these criteria.) Full-time faculty members who sponsor a chapter are also eligible. (Specific details are listed in the Society's constitution.)

Associate membership is available to currently enrolled students, undergraduate or graduate, who have the requisite academic background but who are not majoring or minoring in English. In addition, non-sponsoring faculty members with a degree in English may be associate members.

How do I become a member?

Membership in Sigma Tau Delta is by invitation, extended through a local chapter on behalf of the international organization. Students who meet the qualifications for membership must apply through the chapter on their campus. Once a student contacts the local chapter, the sponsor will check the qualifications and recommend that student for membership. For further information, contact:
Dr. Kerry McKeever mckeever@uidaho.edu or 885-5863.

How much does it cost?

Local chapter dues may vary, but each new member pays a one-time international initiation fee of $26. Eta Chi's dues are $10.  The total for the first year is therefore $36, and $10 afterwards per year to maintain active membership.

What are the advantages of membership?

Membership in Sigma Tau Delta is an outward recognition of personal accomplishment. It provides opportunities for those interested in English language and literature to join with like-minded persons on the local, regional, national, and international levels and to participate in and present professional work at conferences and conventions at these levels. Members receive the Newsletter while they remain active in their local chapters. They also receive and have the opportunity to contribute to the award-winning literary publication, The Rectangle, and are eligible to compete for several $1,000-$2500 scholarships and awards. There are also internship and graduate assistantship opportunities available for members.
