English Department University of Idaho
Information for Applicants to Graduate Programs
Application to any of the
graduate degree programs in the En glish department requires that most
materials be sent to
the Graduate Admissions Office. However, applications for teaching
assistantships and English department scholarships require forms and materials
to be sent to the English department. Please read this sheet carefully
for information about where and to whom to send which
application materials. Failure to file required materials with the
appropriate office will delay evaluation of your application.
To the
Graduate Admissions Office, applicants to all English department graduate
programs must meet the following admission requirements:
n
Have
a bachelor's degree from a college
or university accredited by a recognized accrediting association,
n
Have an undergraduate grade-point average of 3.00
or higher for the last 60 semester credits (or 90 quarters credits) or an
undergraduate cumulative grade-point average of 2.8 or higher,
n
Have maintained at least a
2.8 grade-point average in subsequent academic work if any, and
n
Have been reviewed and
recommended for acceptance by the English department administering the
program in which the student seeks to enroll.
Applicants
will be required to submit the following:
n
The College of Graduate Studies application form
(you
may apply online: see
http://www.students.uidaho.edu/gradadmissions/)
n
Three confidential letters of recommendation, preferably from
professors who can speak to your aptitude for graduate study and the
particular program to which you are applying. Recommenders should send
letters directly to the College of Graduate Studies at the address below.
n
Official transcripts for all undergraduate and graduate
courses completed at each college or university you have attended.
n
A Statement of Career Objectives, not more than two
double-spaced pages, including your
desires and goals for the program you wish to enter. (M.F.A. applicants
should explain their interest in the study of creative writing and in the
University of Idaho’s M.F.A. program in particular.)
n
One to two page
Curriculum Vitae/Resume
n
A writing sample. For the M.A. (English), M.A. in
Teaching English as a Second Language, and M.A.T., send an
analytical essay, preferably a paper for a course and preferably with the
instructor’s comments on it. Length: 8 -20 pages. For the M.F.A in Creative Writing,
send up to 25 pages of fiction or nonfiction; 10 pages of poetry. (M.F.A.
applicants who are applying for teaching assistantships need also
to
send an analytical essay, 8-20 pages.)

ADMISSION DEADLINES: For entry in the fall,
and for all scholarships and teaching assistantships: all materials must be
postmarked by February 1. Late applications to the M.A., M.A.-TESL,
and M.A.T. programs will be considered as space allows.
For spring
entry into the M.A.. M.A.-TESL or M.A.T. programs: the deadline is
ordinarily
September 1. Again, programs will be considered as space
allows. The MFA program does not admit spring-entry students.
