Welcome to the University of Idaho’s Graduate Studies in English website. These pages contain information about our programs and faculty, as well as everything you’ll need to apply for admission, teaching assistantships, and scholarships. We’ve also thrown in some useful information about the area.

The Department of English offers four different graduate programs. Our Master of Arts degree allows a student to focus on such areas as literature, literary criticism and theory, and rhetoric and composition. The Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) degree provides students with the theory and practice necessary to teach English as a second language. The Master of Arts in Teaching gives already-certified secondary-school teachers the opportunity to sharpen both their teaching skills and knowledge of English literature, and our Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing is for those who plan a career as a professional writer or teacher of writing.

Whatever your goal—pursuing a Ph.D., teaching English abroad, or publishing your creative work—our distinguished faculty are dedicated to helping you achieve it. There are typically 70-80 graduate students in English enrolled each semester, and students and faculty work together closely.  Graduate students sponsor monthly colloquia to share their work and to socialize.

The University of Idaho stands where the Bitterroot range of the Rockies fades into the rolling hills of the Palouse; it’s a place of uncommon beauty. Though rural, the area is far from provincial. Washington State University is located a mere eight miles away, and the two universities form a vibrant cultural and intellectual community.  Moscow--unlike other towns hosting major Western universities--is a community very strongly committed to controlling growth and preserving a progressive small-town atmosphere.

Enjoy your browse through these pages, and if you decide to apply or if you have any further questions, hit the ADMISSIONS button on the left; on that page you will find procedures for applying and the names and addresses of the program directors.
