Nixon Undergraduate Scholarships For 2007-2008

To All Majors in English (College of Letters, Arts, & Social Sciences) and Secondary
Education:  English Teaching Major (College of Education)

You may be a candidate for a Grace V. Nixon Undergraduate Scholarship worth $2,000 yearly.  Or you may have this scholarship now and need to apply for renewal next year.

Grace Nixon was a public school teacher whose bequest to the English department stipulated that scholarships be used to advance the teaching of English and be limited to those students “who intend to teach English.”   Nixon Scholarships normally require, as a minimum qualification, a grade point average of 3.5, both in English courses and overall.  We will consider students with lower GPA’s, however, if there is other strong evidence of ability, improvement, and a strong intent to teach.

Nixon Scholarships are renewable for a maximum of three years (six semesters), plus an extra semester for students who seek secondary-education certification and do the teaching practicum (EDTE 431).   But renewal is not automatic; it depends on four criteria:  (1) continued academic excellence, (2) full-time enrollment and steady progress toward the degree, (3) steady progress toward your English or Secondary Education: English major, and (4) continuing evidence of your intent to teach English.

The English Department offers other scholarships also, notably the David Scholarships, but you do not need to apply for these.  The scholarships committee uses information from the Office of Student Financial Aid and from English faculty and advisers in determining David and other scholarship awards.  However, since the Nixon Scholarships are limited to students who intend to teach English, you must apply for them, submit a statement of intent to teach English (see application directions), and list two references, preferably English faculty, who agree to be contacted by the scholarships committee regarding your work.

If you currently hold a Nixon Freshman Scholarship (nonrenewable—awarded when you were a high-school senior), or a David, Woodbury, Hungerford, or Hogue Scholarship (all English department scholarships), you may apply for a Nixon, which usually carries a larger stipend, to replace the other.  If you currently have a Nixon Undergraduate Scholarship, you need to reapply.  SEE THE ACCOMPANYING DIRECTIONS FOR APPLICANTS.

If you have questions, please come in to see me in Brink 200, or phone (885-6156) or send me a note (c/o English Dept. or email hesford@uidaho.edu ).  The deadline for submitting a Nixon Scholarship application for 2005-2006 is March 1, 2007.

                                                            Sincerely,

                                                           Walter Hesford
