Placement in Writing Courses for Students Who
First Enrolled in the University Before Fall 2000:
We
determine your placement in a writing course according to your test
scores and an English Placement Table.
You must use the table that was in effect when you first enrolled
at the university as a degree-seeking student.
In January 2000, the State Board of Education revised the table
that all public four-year universities in Idaho must use.
Thus, we now have the Old Placement Table (just below) and the New
Placement Table.
The Old English Placement Table — For students first enrolled as
degree-seeking students for courses taught during summer 2000 (before
August 18, 2000) or earlier:

The following three paragraphs apply only to students first
enrolled as degree-seeking students for courses taught during summer
2000 (before August 18, 2000) or earlier.
Your English placement is determined by the regulations that were
in effect for the term when you first enrolled at the university (not
the semester that you end up taking English 101 or 102).
If your SAT verbal score is 539 or below OR your ACT English
score is 20 or below, you need to take both English 101 and 102 (3
credits each). You should take English 101 in the first semester
you are enrolled at the University of Idaho and English 102 in the next
semester. If you have not
done this, you need to take English 101 or 102 the very next semester
you register for classes. If
your SAT verbal score is 440 or below OR your ACT English score is
17 or below, you will not be able to register for English 101 by
using the Web. (The Web
registration system is set to deal with students who are using the
Current English Placement Table.) You
must call the Registrar (208-885-6731) to explain your situation.
They will then register you for a section that is open.
If your SAT verbal score is between 540 and 739 OR your ACT
English score is between 21 and 30, you receive 3 advanced placement
credits for English 101 and need to take English 102. You should
take English 102 during the first semester you are enrolled at the
University of Idaho. If you have not done this, you need to take English
101 or 102 the very next semester you register for classes.
If your SAT verbal score is 740 or higher OR your ACT English
score is 31 or higher, you receive 3 advanced placement credits for
English 101 and 3 advanced placement credits for English 102. You
may still need to take another writing course, depending on your major,
but it is not necessary to do this during your first semester.
