Advanced
Placement:
At the UI, we use the ACT English, SAT Verbal, or
English COMPASS
scores as one method of assigning “advanced placement credit” (or
“AP credit”). Credit granted for English 101 from an SAT, ACT or COMPASS
score will appear on your transcript after you have successfully passed
English 102. These credits are recorded as UI credit.
You can also earn advanced placement credit from several
other tests, which are recorded as transfer credit. Click here
for more information on
advanced
placement at UI.
When you get advanced placement credit, the course for
which you received the credit shows on your transcript as a P and does
not affect your GPA. If you transfer to another institution, that
other school may not accept courses that you earned at UI through AP
credit. All state schools in Idaho, however, accept the courses for
which you have received advanced placement credit at the UI.
When to
Take English 090, 101, or 102:
You should take English 101 (which may require English
090 as a prerequisite) and English102 as the first courses in your
college career. Regulation
J-3 of the catalog reads in part as follows:
"Degree-seeking students must be enrolled in Engl
090, 101, or 102 in their first semester in residence and in subsequent semesters until they have passed Engl 102."
See more about timing here.
English
090 and Financial Aid:
If
you are placed into English 090 AND you receive Financial Aid, you will
need to register for 12 additional credits besides English 090. If that turns out to be too heavy a load for you during your
first semester, you may drop one course later on. To receive your financial aid award at the beginning of the
semester, though, you will have to be registered for at least 12 credits
(not counting English 090). In
order to retain your financial aid, you will have to earn at least nine
credits a semester (a total of 18 for the year).

090 and money here.
Special
Course Fee for English 090:
Students
enrolled in English 090 will be assessed a special fee of $100 to offset
part of their instructional costs.
Challenging
your Placement in English 090 or English 101:
You may challenge your
placement in English 090 or English 101 by either of two methods:
 | Taking the Writing
Skills Placement test of COMPASS. A score between 68 and 94 will place you in English 101; a score
of 95 to 99 will place you in English 102. |
 |
Writing an excellent placement essay on the second
day of the English 090 or 101 class. |

090 and here for English 101.
Challenging
English 102:
If you have written several college-level essays that
use multiple sources to develop an argument, you may
challenge English 102. In order for a challenge to be
successful, you must have several papers that use outside several
sources and that follow the conventions for scholarly writing of a
recognized professional body (MLA or the APA). Read more about
challenging
English 102 here.
