Adding Yourself to a Wait List                      Printable Version of this Text
for an English Class

(The other changes being made, these procedures apply to all classes that have wait lists.)

When a course for which you want to register is full, you can put yourself on the wait list. When you do so, your name will be entered into the wait-list system, and you will be automatically registered for the course when a space becomes available. You may automatically be placed in a different available section if the meeting time is the same.

The wait-list system is in effect only through the first six days of the semester (not counting weekends or holidays). This means that for fall 2008, the wait-list system stops working at 11:59 pm on Tuesday, September 2, 2008, and all wait lists are removed.

You can not wait list yourself for a different time if you are already registered for the course. If you must change sections after you are already registered and the other sections are full, you must first drop the course before using the wait-list system (think carefully about whether you really want to do this, however).

How the Wait List System Works                       PDF Version of this Text

Each hour the wait-list system looks for spaces in all courses that have wait lists. When the system finds a space in the course, it then looks at ALL the students on the wait list for that particular time, selects the student who has been waiting the longest, and registers that student in the course. It also deletes the student from all other wait lists for that course.

If you are added to a course through the wait-list system, the program will also send an email message to your UI VandalMail account informing you that you are registered for the course. If you have not done so already, you should activate your email account by using Vandal Setup: www.vandalsetup.uidaho.edu.

In a multi-section course such as English 101 or 102, there are often several sections offered at the same meeting time. For these courses, the wait-list system groups all of the students who are waiting for a course at a particular TIME and then registers the students in that order that they were placed on the list. So, even though you may have put yourself on the wait list for a particular SECTION and even be the first one to do so, the program will first register someone else who was waiting longer in a different section IF that section is at the same time as yours. It’s the number of people in a particular TIME that matters, not the number of people waiting for a particular section. This also means that it is unnecessary to put yourself on several wait lists for classes that meet at the same time. However, it is to your advantage to be on wait lists for as many different times that fit your schedule as possible.

If you are registered for more than 18 or more credits, the wait-list system will not add you to a three-credit class (which is what most English classes are). This is because you would exceed the limit of 20 credits (Non-degree seeking students are limited to 7 credits per semester). While you may still put yourself on a waiting list, when you your turn to register finally comes, the system will pass over you to take the next person if you are still registered for 18 or more credits. If you want to use the wait-list system, you must drop a course, so that your total number of credits is 17 or less.

If you are going to register for more than 20 credits, you must get the permission of your dean using an Add/Drop Form.

How to Put Yourself on the Wait List for an English Class

Follow these steps if all sections of the course for which you can register are full:

  1. Look at the Class Schedule for Fall 2008 by going to www.uidaho.edu/schedule/. Write down the CRNs of all the sections that fit your schedule. Remember that your chances of getting registered for the course increase with the number of different times you are able to select. There is no need to select more than one section at any particular time (because being waitlisted for one section is the same as being waitlisted for all the others at the same time).

  2. Go to the Add/Drop Classes option under the Registration menu (at www.uidaho.edu/registration).

  3. Enter the CRNs for the sections you have noted in the “Add Classes Worksheet” area and click the “Submit Changes” button. If the sections are full, you will encounter a Registration Add Error.

  4. To add yourself to the wait list, click on the drop-down menu labeled “Action” at the start of each course listed under “Registration Add Errors” and select “Wait List.” Then click the “Submit Changes” button. In this way, you can wait list yourself for several different times.

  5. You should see the same screen, only this time the courses for which you have been waitlisted will appear under your Current Schedule.

If you are waitlisted for a course, you are NOT yet registered.  For writing classes, especially English 101 and 102, you should NOT attend class until you are registered.  This is because it is not possible to know exactly which section you will be going into.  Each section is a little different, and it is not good to do be doing the homework for the wrong section.
