English 101, Introduction to
College Writing
This course is a prerequisite for English 102. To be placed into
this course, you must first have a score of 18 or higher on the
English ACT, 450 or higher on the Verbal SAT, or 68 or higher on the
COMPASS writing test.
This course requires you to write five major assignments--essays
that range from about three to five pages in length. In addition,
there are a number of small assignments required as well as
participation in class and in work in which you read and respond to
some of the writing of other students in the course.
At the end of the semester, you produce a writing portfolio, which
contains your best work from the semester along with examples of
earlier versions of those same essay. In addition, you need to
include a comprehensive reflective letter, in which you comment on
the work that you have done throughout the semester. This portfolio
is graded by two other composition instructors besides your teacher.
In addition to doing all the major assignments, attending class, and
doing the homework, you must also be able to produce a passing
portfolio in order to pass this course.

All students taking
English 101 must abide by the writing
program's policy on plagiarism and the
attendance
policy.
