English
090 and Financial Aid:
If
you are placed into English 090 AND you receive Financial Aid, you will
need to register for 12 additional credits besides English 090. If that turns out to be too heavy a load for you during your
first semester, you may drop one course later on. To receive your financial aid award at the beginning of the
semester, though, you will have to be registered for at least 12 credits
(not counting English 090). In
order to retain your financial aid, you will have to earn at least nine
credits a semester (a total of 18 for the year).
English
090 is a prerequisite for English 101, but you do not earn college
credit for the course. In
terms time that you will have to spend on the course, you should think
of English 090 as requiring the same amount of time as would be required
for a three-credit freshman-level 100-level course. Taking 12 credits and English 090, in other words, will require
about the same amount of time as it would take to take 15 credits.
Your
eligibility for financial aid is determined only by courses that carry
college credit, so English 090 cannot be counted for this purpose.
The policy for what constitutes satisfactory academic policy,
however, requires full-time undergraduate students to complete only 9
credits a semester (not 12 as it was formerly), or a total of 18 credits
for the academic year, to continue to receive financial aid. You can see this policy described in more detail at the
Financial Aid Web Site.
Students
enrolled in English 090 will be assessed a special fee of $100 to offset
part of their instructional costs.
